Nixon Leads Panthers Past Assumption
May 15, 2009
Box Score
Rindge, NH - For game two of May 15th's NCAA Regional play, Adelphi Baseball turned to their sophomore, Robert Nixon, to take the hill against Assumption. The Panther delivered with a complete game of work, striking out a team individual best of 13 and sending the Greyhounds to the loser's bracket with a shutout, 2-0. With Adelphi's win, the Panthers improve to 33-14, while Assumption falls to 33-20-1 overall.
The first four innings of play saw zeros across the board, but in the top of the fifth the Panthers opened with two straight hits. Chris Weidlein singled up the middle and Anthony Anzalone doubled to left center, advancing Weidlein to third. The next two batters grounded out, but both Justin Ciamillo and Mike Colonna hit the ball hard enough to bring Weidlein and Ciamillo home, giving Adelphi a 2-0 lead.
That was more then enough for Nixon, who gave up just four hits in the final five innings of work and seven total for the game, picking up the win. Nixon also struck out 13, while showing tremendous control, walking none in nine full innings of work.

Baseball Holds On For A Win Over STAC
The Panthers head to the ECC finals with a 3-2 victory

May 9, 2009
Box Score
Garden City, NY - Consistent runs throughout the semi-final match up against St. Thomas Aquinas College have the Adelphi Baseball squad heading to the finals of the East Coast Conference tournament. The Panthers sent the Spartans to the losing bracket with a 3-2 blow, improving their record 30-14, while STAC drops to 25-22.
The Panthers got things started with run in the second inning on Anthony Anzalone double to left center, which drove in Mike Colonna. The Spartans would answer Adelphi's run two innings later when Matt Smith homered over the left center fence.
Tied going into the bottom sixth, the Panthers readied their bats. Senior Bill Milillo led off with a triple down the left field line, and Chris Weidlein drove him in on a sacrifice fly to the centerfielder. The Panthers would strand two that inning, however, in the seventh, Adelphi got one more around on a Melillo single, scoring Robert Paccione. Adelphi let up one in the ninth, but it was not enough and at the last out the score remained 3-2, AU.
Robert Nixon picked up his sixth win of the season, going 8.2 innings, letting up six hits and one earned run. Mike Colonna took the mound in the 9th and closed the game out, earning his eighth save.
With the win, the Panthers not only move the ECC finals, they also earn their 30th win of the season - an accomplishment done twice in the past 10 years. Last time was in 2007 (35), when the Panthers made it into the Northeast Region. In 1999 Adelphi won 32 games and made it to the College World Series.

Welland infielder snags scholarship offer from Ohio school

After 26 years working with young men, baseball coach Tim Mead figures he knows how to read a prospect about as well as he knows when to issue an intentional walk to an
opposing batter.
"You sort of know within the first five to 10 minutes of meeting a player whether they will be right for the program," the head baseball coach at Walsh University said.
Mead, who also coaches men's soccer at the small Catholic university in Canton, Ohio, added that being "right for the program" isn't limited to the tools a prospect can bring to the Cavaliers on the diamond.
"Character and integrity are very important, too. It's very important that we get players who are very coachable and who can listen."

Scott Bullett: a slacker's worst nightmare, a high school guidance counsellor's best friend. Before the former Major Leaguer fills out a lineup card for one of his development teams, he studies the players' report cards. Prospects on the Bullett Proof Prospects had better dedicate at least as much time to maintaining their academic average in the classroom as they do to raising their batting average on the field." Believe me, if they're in trouble at school for low marks, they're in trouble here," Bullett said as he gestures to the batting cages and pitching mounds at his indoor training facility at the Niagara Regional Exhibition grounds. Players can be suspended for "two days, two weeks or longer" if they let their marks slide and begin thinking of themselves as "athlete students" rather than "student athletes."
